What If You Have No Line-Of-Site To The Outside Cell Phone Signal?

What if you have no line-of-site to the outside cell phone signal?

1. If you have no cell phone signal at all, these days that usually means the signal is being blocked by a hill, trees, a building or electrical transmission lines.

2. If there is a truly blocked line-of-sight or no cell phone signal for any other reason, you will usually see the dreaded "No Service" notice.

3. A cell phone booster / repeater will not work if there is a blocked line-of-sight to the outside signal. A thousand times zero is still zero.

4. If you have no cell phone signal at all, first find the last spot near the building where you received a good, two-three bar signal. Then look around. If there is a hill between the good cell phone signal and the application building, you have to get a cell phone antenna high enough to get above it so that there is a clean line of sight between the building and the good signal. You do not need line-of-sight to the tower, just the good cell phone signal.

5. Now, if you stand on top of the hill that is blocking your line-of-sight and you get a good signal, you are likely in luck. Years ago I learned that in these cases, if the ridge is too high to elevate a cell phone antenna above, all is not necessarily lost.

6. If there is a signal on top of the hill, it is likely coming across it, but too high for it to help you at your building.

7. If there is a good cell phone signal on top of the hill, then elevates a high-gain yagi cell phone antenna, like the Wilson 301124, as high as is reasonably possible, then point it toward the top of the ridge. This may mean that you need to bend the antenna pole, but you cab get that done at your local muffler shop.

8. If you do not raise the front of the yagi antenna more than about 30% above the back end, it will still be functional for your purpose.

9. If you get three or more bars of signal strength using the Wilson 301124 yagi antenna, you will have a signal that the amplifier can boost if, so long as you do not use more than 50' of LMR400 coax cable between the antenna and amplifier.

10. If trees are blocking the line-of-sight and they are not part of a forest, you may be in luck. Not one of our customers at UnwiredSignal.com has ever needed to elevate an antenna completely above just an area of just several trees, to our knowledge. We tell customers everyday that they will be able to find a sweet spot where the signal comes through the trees somewhere above the halfway point of the tree height.

11. That is because most trees taper at about two-thirds the tree height. If there are several trees together, you should see them "thin out" at about that point. One way or another you should be able to point a yagi antenna through a sweet spot in most tree lines.
