How to get past the black screen showing 'Boot Failure. System Halted' error in Windows XP

Sometimes errors occur so frequently that it becomes impossible to track the real cause of the problem. Most errors occur at the system start up. In a normal boot process, a POST ( or Power-On Self Test) is the first thing that is performed to test the BIOS chip, memory, and other subsystems. Then, the system's BIOS tries to read MBR (or Master Boot Record) which is the first sector of the primary hard disk. MBR now takes control and searches the boot sector to locate the boot loader program that will carry out the rest of the booting process. If any of these structures or files get corrupt, you may face a critical data loss situation as your computer will fail to boot start. To overcome these problems, you need to go for Windows recovery through a reliable third-party utility.

For instance, you may get frustrated by facing repetitive BSODs (or Blue Screen Of Death) on your Windows XP computer screen. When you try to re-install Windows XP, you may get a black screen displaying the following error message:

"Boot Failure. System Halted"

If you try to repair the Windows XP installation using the boot disc, you find that no partitions are listed in the repair window. This indicates that there is some problem with your hard disk.

Cause:

The reasons that may be responsible for the above behavior are-

• The required boot files are missing or corrupt.

• The system is trying to boot from a non-bootable device.

• The jumper setting of the hard disk is incorrect.

• There could be a loose E-IDE cable connection.

Due to all the above reasons, the hard disk becomes inaccessible, making the system unbootable and causing you to lose all the vital data stored therein. In such circumstances, you may use a backup to recover the lost data. If the backup is not there, you should try to recover Windows by following the below mentioned resolution steps.

• Check that no external media is connected to your computer. If anything is connected, just remove it.

• Change the boot configuration settings to make your primary hard disk the first option for your computer.

• Try repairing the boot files by using fixboot and fixmbr commands from the Windows Recovery Console.
