As compared to the rival half-inch tape cartridges, the AIT backup tape is almost 67 percent smaller in size. Additionally, its tape area and tape length has been reduced by 27% and 40% respectively. You will be amazed to know that even with such small physical size, the Sony AIT-5 tape cartridge can store massive 400GB native data. Greater media capacity has been made possible by the significant increase in the recording density.
For long term data storage, you can trust Sony AIT-5 technology. Its special WORM functionality ensures superior data integrity by recording the data in a non-erasable and over-write protected format. SDX5-400C is a rewritable AIT5 tape, whereas SDX5-400W is a Sony AIT5 WORM cartridge. Internal and external AIT-5 drives are available with flexible ultra-160 wide SCSI connectivity option. Sony AIT 5 drives feature 24 Mbps native throughput rate. Thanks to the increased 2.6 to 1 data compression, you can store 1.04 TB compressed data per single AIT-5 cartridge. Sony AIT 5 drives feature three-generation backward compatibility. So you can use AIT-4, AIT-3 EX and AIT-3 tapes with AIT-5 drives, and confidently perform both read and write operations.

Sony has used AME-III (advanced metal evaporated) system for the development of AIT5 backup tapes. As a result, the Sony AIT-5 tape realizes higher output, significantly reduced noise level and longer media life of 30,000 full tape passes.
