Restaurant Menu Printing Tips for Foreign Items

Restaurant menu printing for establishments that serve food from different parts of the world is a more complicated task because of the language involved. If attempting to remain authentic, menus that deal with international fare will likely publish a variety of words that are not commonly included in English or American. Failure to understand what is being ordered can cause obvious problems for patrons and business owners. To provide the most satisfactory dining experience, restaurant menu printing should easily compensate for any potential communication issues.

Know the Region and Demographic

Whereas a Cajun restaurant in the middle of New Orleans can get away with omissions of detailed definitions, restaurants not in an isolated sector of high-income, high-education or a specific ethnicity will likely need to explain to patrons what is being served. Using a different language to describe a dish is ideal to projecting a cultural ambience, though a failure to offer additional resources for ordering is only acceptable where the diners are highly likely to understand what's available. 

Some restaurants of extreme formality that serve French or Italian cuisine may not offer additional resource s or descriptions as a matter of prestige. Speak Clearly

One way that restaurants have been able to identify items of an international variety on the menu without overwhelming each page with descriptions is by adding a glossary. Ideally not placed in the area of the menu responsible for bringing in the most sales, a glossary can be situated in the back defining words individually for the patron to decipher within a dish. The glossary helps avoid rambling descriptions by giving members a dictionary-like resource they can use to compare items and ingredients.

However the communication is ironed out, it is imperative that restaurant owners leave little to chance about a patron's understanding of their menu. Restaurant menu printing that assumes too much may be the first step towards a failed operation or a reprinting. Any mistakes made in a menu printing layout are going to be costly due to the price of corrections and the waste generated with an unusable product. Serving foreign dishes can be exciting and attract new business, but diners are unlikely to come back if they aren't served what they intended to order.
