Dial-Up Internet Explained For The Newcomer To Connectivity

Dial-up Internet is when a computer establishes a connection to the Internet by dialling into the ISP by means of an analogue modem and telephone line. This form of connection, although slow, is the least expensive form of Internet available.

It is great for travellers as a backup as in many places such as rural areas a dial-up Internet connection may be the only option available. This is because it is inexpensive and setup of the connection is easy.

To connect your Dial-up Internet you will need a standard phone line, modem, and a number provided by your ISP. The connection process is by means of dialling in to your ISP and having your modem synchronize with the dial tone.

This type of connection's speed may be affected by a variety of elements such as modem quality and signal noise. Signal noise can commonly be found in places such as hotels where the line is shared by many different extensions or in rural areas where the signal has to travel great distances before reaching its destination.

Dial-up Internet modems can be found in two different types namely internal and external. Internal being where the modem is inserted in one of the computer's PCI slot and external being where the modem is placed outside of the computer connecting to the computer's serial port via a specialized cable. Both types of modems are connected to the line via a standard phone cable.

If a person wants a faster connection to the Internet which he can use for downloads and frequent Internet use he may want to look at a faster and more expensive connection such as an ADSL line or perhaps go the wireless route.

Dial-up Internet would be great for someone on a tight budget wanting a connection for basic Internet use or to have as a backup connection should the current connection fail to work properly.
