Secure Console Server Access

When the number of computers and server in a network starts to grow, it will no longer be practical to have one management console per computer. It can be extremely inconvenient to service each individual computer if there are over 20 or 50 desktops in the company. A secure console server will allow the administrator to safely access every console in the company from one single station. All the computers will need to be connected to the main server via a LAN switch console or IP switch.

An efficient server should provide console access from anywhere, anytime, even if the technician is in a different state or country. The ability of a console server to access from multiple locations is one of the reasons why it is so popular. Computers which need maintenance can easily be fixed by logging onto the mainframe console server which can access any computer that is connected to it. For large server farms and data centers, having a central console is imperative to having an efficient and cost effective system.

Although a central server is very convenient, it can also be an enormous security breach if it is not protected properly. Any hacker who gains access to the main console will be able to take control of the entire network, potentially affecting computers, routers, and server. A secure console server should allow convenient and quick access for IT technicians, but it will also need to keep out intruders. The central console is the most important area to protect because any hacking attempt can affect every computer and device that it is connected to.
Many servers are made to be accessed remotely through the internet for extra convenience, but this poses a potential security problem because hackers can gain access by hitching onto the connection between your computer and the server. Using a good encryption service is suitable for most cases, although it is not foolproof. For this reason, technicians should never access secretive features on other computers over the internet, even if they are using a high level of encryption.

Although it is very important to protect the main server, it is just as important to protect the client computers as well. A secure console server can be compromised if a hacker has taken over one of the client computers and is using it to access the server. Make sure that each computer has an appropriate firewall and the users are aware of potential security risks. You can better protect your server by not allowing computers to have full access to it, instead allowing limited access to necessary functions. One weak link in your network chain can compromise the entire network, so ensure that every computer is well protected.
